Athletic Adventures Aquatic Center FAQs

Swim Lesson and General Questions

How long will it take my child to learn to swim?

Athletic Adventures Aquatics Center does not estimate how long it takes someone to learn to swim. Each level of our curriculum ensures the student is learning the skills needed to provide a solid foundation for a successful and natural transition to the next layer of skills. Each participant has unique water experiences, abilities, and personalities; these all determine the speed at which different skills are achieved. A key component to learning to swim is consistency. Your child’s progress will depend on your commitment to our program. Children learn best through repetitive motion.

How often do classes meet, and for how long?

  • Classes are held weekly and last for 30 minutes each
  • Semi-Private Lessons are 30 minutes long
  • Private lessons are 20-minute sessions

What is the student-to-teacher ratio in your group classes?

  • Our classes will have three students for every teacher
  • Our parent-participation classes will have a maximum of three student/parent pairs per teacher

Is Athletic Adventures Aquatic Center a year-round swim school?

Our program offers continuous enrollment. You can join anytime, and tuition will be prorated. Your child will stay enrolled until you submit a drop request in the parent portal.

Do you recommend private lessons over group lessons?

We offer both lesson options, and the best choice depends on the student's personality and needs. Most students thrive in group settings, as enjoyment enhances the learning process.

What kind of training do your teachers have?

Before they can independently teach a class, all Athletic Adventures Aquatic Center water confidence coaches have completed 30+ hours of in-pool, video, and classroom training. We believe it is imperative that our instructors have extensive and detailed education prior to leading classes.

What swim lesson options are available?

We provide group, semi-private, and private swim lessons (coming July), and we may suggest a specific class setting based on the student's age and skill level. If you are uncertain about which class to register for, please reach out to our office. We are happy to assist you in finding the right class!

What if my child is not toilet trained?

  • Safety is our number one priority, and prevention is the only way to prevent accidents from happening in our pool!
  • Students who have been potty trained for less than 6 months, and those NOT COMPLETELY potty trained, must wear 2 SNUG-FITTING REUSABLE swim diapers.
  • According to the CDC, no swim diaper holds fecal material for more than 3-5 minutes. By double diapering, we hope to get the full 5 minutes.
  • Although we don’t require the brand (Happy Nappy) of reusable diapers we sell, we have found them to be the best in containing fecal material. Reusable swim diapers can be purchased in our swim shop.
  • All cloth swim diapers need to pass the two-finger test; if you can insert two fingers under the elastic of the legs and waist, the swim diaper is too large, and the child will not be allowed in the water.

Poop happens! Unfortunately, it sometimes occurs in swimming pools, which can lead to closures. Prevention is better for everyone involved.

Please ensure that your child visits the bathroom before the lesson starts, even if they went at home. If you see your child doing the “potty dance” or making the “potty face,” please take them out of class and bring them to the bathroom. Some children may be reluctant to inform the teacher if they need to go.

What if my child reacts to the swim diaper?

Did you wash the swim diaper before using it? Most manufacturers apply chemicals to the fabric, so it’s essential to wash it first.

If your child is sensitive to the swim diaper, you can use a disposable diaper underneath the two reusable ones, like Little Swimmers. However, please note that Little Swimmers do not count as one layer because they do not hold anything in. They can serve as a barrier between sensitive skin and the swim diaper.

Should marks be left on my child’s bottom after removing the diaper?

All cloth swim diapers need to pass the two-finger test; if you can insert two fingers under the elastic of the legs and waist, the swim diaper is too large, and the child will not be allowed in the water.

Since the diaper must fit snugly to be effective, there may be marks where the elastic is on the swim diaper.

What should I bring to our lesson?

  • If a child is not toilet trained or is toilet trained for less than six months, the child must wear 2 SNUG FITTING, REUSABLE DIAPERS. Please read through our Diaper Policy.
  • Bring at least one large towel for a quick wrap-up after leaving the water. While the water is warm, children often feel chilled as they exit the pool and enter the changing area.
  • If you opt to change out of the wet bathing suit before leaving, a plastic bag for wet clothes is helpful.

Are there showers and dressing rooms?

Our facility has toilets and changing areas. A rinsing shower is available on the deck. Please plan to shower at home after your visit.

Can my child start lessons at any time?

Yes, although our classes will vary each week, our curriculum is designed to cover a specific set of skills at each level. This means your child will not miss out on any skill instruction, no matter when they join.

Please note that our program offers continuous enrollment. You can join our classes at any time, and tuition will be prorated accordingly. Your child will remain enrolled in our program until you submit a drop request through our parent portal.

Are goggles required?

Goggles are not required; however, if a student wishes to wear them, we recommend choosing a good pair of recreational goggles that fit securely around the eyes to prevent leaks and fogging. The goggles should fit snugly but comfortably, keeping water out without feeling overly tight. You can purchase goggles from our pro shop.
